Pompeii was completely buried by the eruption of the 79 a.D, followed by other seventy eruptions up to the last one on 1944.
For centuries nothing was known about Pompeii, we had the first retrieval only on 1628, during some works made on the Sarno Valley, where emerged some ruins that aroused scientists of that period. But only a century after began in Herculaneum, and about ten years later in Pompeii, the regular excavations encouraged by Charles III of Borbone, king of the Two Sicilies, but the research aimed only at the finding of material for museums or for the decoration of royal palaces, while the dug up buildings, once despoiled of the masterpieces, were left without any care and exposed to weather conditions.
Only with Joseph Bonaparte and Joachim Murat the works took back with great emphasis and with a great employment of manpower trying to identify the perimeter of the whole city and moving the interest from the mere recovery of precious objects to the knowledge of the architecture and the urbanism.
During the Savoy period, Giuseppe Fiorelli, teacher of archaeology, divided Pompeii in regions and islands numbering all the houses, a system still in use today. Furthermore, belongs to him the invention of the method to pour with plaster the spaces left by the victims, obtaining a cast of the bodies, caught in the moment of death, with dramatic and intense effects.
The years that followed were the best, widening the researches toward east and toward Nola Gate and bringing to light numerous houses. Between 1924 and 1961 Amedeo Maiuri wanted to learn more about the history of Pompeii studying the previous phases of the city and the most ancient layers such as the Forum, the temples and the walls.
In the last thirty years, a modest exploration has been alternate to the activity of maintenance and safeguard, things of primary importance in this place unique in the world.
